Congratulations are in order for Selena Gomez, who took to social media to announce she has said ‘yes!’ to American producer and songwriter Benny Blanco. At the same time, the Only Murders In the Building star revealed her sparkling engagement ring, set with a marquise-cut central diamond.

In a sweet post on her Instagram account, Gomez wrote ‘forever begins now,’ and uploaded images of her diamond engagement ring, a romantic picnic set up, and a shot of the couple (sat on what appears to be their wardrobe floor) clearly celebrating their announcement.
The beautiful ring itself features a gold band set with brilliants and a large central marquise-cut stone (weighing roughly four or five carats), with an estimated cost of at least £200,000. The diamond’s shape could potentially be a personal nod to the lyrics of Gomez’s 2015 song, Good For You, in which she sang “I’m a marquise diamond”.

Sweeter still, marquise cut stones have a historically romantic heritage. They originated in Paris in the 18th century, a commission by King Louis XV of France who ordered a jeweller to cut a diamond inspired by the lips of his beloved mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour.
Because of this history, and due to its elegant, finger-flattering shape, the stone is a popular choice for engagement rings, as spotted on celebrities including Victoria Beckham (who received a Boodles marquise ring from David Beckham in 1998), Rachel Weisz (whose engagment ring from Daniel Craig features a central marquise stone surrounded by emeralds) and Jackie Kennedy (who received an engagement ring with a central marquise stone of over 40 carats from Aristotle Onassis in the late 1960s).
With this sentimental stone now firmly back in the spotlight, expect a flurry of similar rings to follow suit as cuffing season progresses…
