Swiss watchmaker Hublot is celebrating the start of a collaboration with American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham with a colossal snowy installation in the mountain resort of Zermatt

With an epic installation in the icy Swiss mountain resort of Zermatt, Hublot is celebrating the start of a new artist collaboration with New Yorker Daniel Arsham.
The twenty-metre sundial is entitled ‘Light & Time’ and takes shape at Schwarzee, a site with an altitude of 2,583 meters boasting extraordinary scenery of the iconic Matterhorn peak. The work can only be viewed in full from the top of the mountain, which watch enthusiasts can access with a ride up Zermatt’s ski lifts.
“It’s about using time in a way that’s not typical,” says Arsham of the snowy work of art. Arsham, best known for his eroded sculptures of modern-day artefacts, including radios, telephones and cameras, has previously lent his creative eye to outdoor works of bronze and stone – ice being an exciting new medium for him.
“I worked closely with the team that does the grooming of the trails, so they know how to work the snow,” he reveals. “[Hublot] really allowed me to use the properties and the technology they’ve built to make something new. That’s why I’m here – to push.”
“We’ve been hoping this day would come!” says the team at Hublot. “Daniel Arsham is one of the most exciting creative talents working in contemporary art today – and we’re so excited to welcome him into the Hublot Family and call him a Hublot Ambassador. His bold, audacious, groundbreaking portfolio of work is a perfect match for Hublot and our approach to watch creation: first, unique, different.
We’ve no doubt this will become a hugely productive collaboration, and we can’t wait to explore it further with Daniel and with Hublot and art fans. Hublot loves Daniel Arsham!”
