You never know who you might meet on your travels. In the case of London jeweller Hannah Martin, saying hello to a man wearing one of her own designs at Heathrow back in 2021 proved serendipitous. The man in question was the bassist from Coldplay, Guy Berryman, who was returning to the UK after a concert in Los Angeles, and was wearing one of Martin’s gold and gemstone hoop earrings – a piece from one of Martin’s earliest collections.

Unbeknownst to Martin, Berryman had been considering launching his own ready-to-wear line at the time, later called Applied Art Forms, and their meeting sewed the seeds of a complementary range of jewels to accompany his clothing.

The duo came together out of a mutual admiration for elevated design and craftsmanship and the result is A Vanitas, a collection of 11 jewels made in 18 carat gold and silver. Inspired by the 17th century Dutch tradition of Vanitas paintings – which, like ‘memento mori’ images, were symbolic to remind people of the brevity of life – the pieces are designed as “a call to arms to make the most of every living moment.”

The unisex range includes stylised razor blade motifs, which take their cue from hospital ID tags and evoke ‘the circularity of life’, plus hand-carved pearl skulls, an emblem that regularly appeared in Vanitas paintings. Martin’s punk-inflected safety pins also feature, in a small and larger-sized gold earring, the latter bearing a miniature skull as well.

With prices ranging from £95 – £8,000, the collection will debut at Dover Street Market and will also be available on the Hannah Martin and Applied Art Forms websites.
