England's Captain Harry Kane wore a £520,000 rainbow themed Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in a not so subtle dig at FIFA arriving at the England vs Iran World Cup match
By Ian Thorley
England captain Harry Kane was photographed wearing a rare Rolex Daytona Rainbow as he arrived at FIFA’s stadium in Doha on Monday ahead of England’s World Cup win over Iran.
It follows Kane’s ban, along with the captains of six other teams, from wearing the One Love armband in support of the LGBTQ+ community at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The armband features the words ‘One Love’ as well as a multi-coloured striped heart, and the number 1. The captains of numerous teams including Wales’ Gareth Bale and Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands had planned to wear the armband during the tournament. However, FIFA threatened any players wearing them that they would receive an automatic yellow card.
Harry Kane had insisted he would wear one, and once banned he wore a Rolex Daytona Rainbow to his press conference against Iran, in perhaps what is a similar symbolic protest. The Rolex Daytona Rainbow features an array of coloured gemstones around the bezel. It includes 36 baguette-cut sapphires of varying hues and a diamond encrusted dial. The watch first made an appearance at the 2012 Basel Fair and is valued at £520,000. The watch is waterproof to 330 feet and also features a chronograph function.
Rainbow-themed watches were a huge trend this year, and other leading manufacturers including Audemars Piguet, Breitling and Chopard have all unveiled timepieces with a spectrum of diamond embellishments.
