Kendrick Lamar's net worth is one of the highest in rap, estimated at over $75 million and is therefore unafraid to take risks with his watch and jewellery collection. He has managed to amass one of the most expensive jewellery collections amongst the rap community. From heavy metals chokers to fantastical gems plucked straight from Greek mythology.
Story by Joshua Hendren
Ahead of his long-awaited upcoming album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar just dropped his first lead single since 2018. Titled ‘The Heart Part 5’, the new track is one of his most charged and thought-provoking projects to date, and showcases hip-hop’s poet laureate at his best.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time, Lamar has come into his own style-wise in recent years, particularly when it comes to his jewellery choices.
With a penchant for clean, sculptural designs, Lamar has amassed an exquisite array of jewels and watches. The most noteworthy pieces in his collection come courtesy of the young Brooklyn-based jeweller Martine Ali, who decked out the rapper in sleek, industrial-influenced silver jewellery for his 2017 DAMN tour. Best known for reimagining dated yet classic styles like ID bracelets, keychains and the wallet chain into self-customisable treasures whose fans count everyone from Lady Gaga to actress Diane Kruger, the ex-DKNY jewellery designer created what she termed as a “jewellery wardrobe” for the rapper, adorning him in a heavy metal choker and chain bracelets that shine with a mix of hip-hop and punk influences.
Besides Ali, Lamar also counts Tarin Thomas as one of his go-to jewellers, a New York-based label whose signatures include versatile stackable rings made from earth stones and metal combinations. One of Lamar’s most recognised pieces from the brand is the Archie ring, a gleaming flat, barrel face signet ring worn by the rapper in his ‘Humble’ and ‘DNA’ music videos. Available in both sterling silver and yellow brass, the unisex design is punctuated by a striking tiger’s eye crystal, with no two stones quite alike.
Fantastical pieces from Han Cholo, an LA-based jewellery label launched in 2002 by designer Brandon Schoolhouse, also feature in the American rapper’s collection. Inspired by rock ‘n’ roll, science fiction and fantasy art, the line has become a go-to among music’s greatest (think Rihanna, Gwen Stafani, Snoop Dogg and Miley Cyrus) with Lamar being no exception. The rapper was spotted rocking the brand’s Medusa ring as early as 2014, paired with the weighty stainless steel Pyramid ring. Available in 925 sterling silver and 24K gold-plated vermeil, the head-turning Medusa ring is inspired by the half-snake half-human monster of Greek mythology and features the silver face of Medusa and a gold head of over 20 snakes topping her off.
On the watch front, Lamar is rarely seen wearing anything other than a Rolex timepiece. His favourites include the Rolex Day-Date President, a classic choice complete with a full yellow gold case and matching champagne dial. He can also be seen sporting the piece in his music video for ‘Poetic Justice’.Boasting an impressive personal style with universal appeal, Lamar is unafraid to take risks when it comes to his jewellery, and with a new album dropping on May 13th, we can anticipate that many more outstanding jewellery moments are still to come.
