If you’re a fan of Justin Bieber or retro-kitschy-colourful jewellery, you’ll have become aware of LA-based jewellery brand Omnis Studios last summer. Established by stylist Alyssa Sutter, it’s fast become an Instagram favourite – and can regularly be spotted on Bieber while he’s out and about with wife Hailey, or worn in his music videos.

The Ellie Chain necklace

“Omnis Studios was actually highly inspired by my male friend group,” says Sutter. “At the time, I had a women’s fine jewellery brand and I noticed that a lot of my male friends kept asking me to make them custom chain necklaces. That is when I started to notice that there are not enough jewellery brands offering styles for men or even unisex for that matter. There are jewellery brands targeted to women that will have a small ‘mens collection’ but it didn’t seem to be enough or wasn’t the best way to target a male audience, in my opinion. After this realisation, I came to the conclusion that jewellery should not be defined by sexes, jewellery can be worn and adored by everyone – every individual, every shape, every size and why does that space not exist?”

The Ryder Chain necklace

Pieces are made in California and often feature fun and surreal-quirky charms.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of jewellery throughout my childhood and adolescence,” explains Sutter, who recalls plenty of photos of her layered in her mother’s necklaces aged three. “Even in high school I was always covered in jewellery – multiple earrings, layering necklaces, and I wore a ring on literally every finger.”

The Ryder Chain necklace is a design that Sutter feels best defines the brand. “It has the perfect balance of femininity and masculinity with chunkiness of the chain and the mix of metals. The Ryder also provides versatility in how it can be worn so it really allows the wearer to showcase their style whether the chain is looped through the clasp like a lariat necklace or worn wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet.”

Sutter says her design process “may not be the most traditional but it works for me”. Which she says translates as: “My brain and creative process really flows late at night, most often in my sleep. I reflect back on my experiences, observe my surroundings/community and really try to create pieces that show us where we have been and where we are going. First, my ideas are drawn out and reviewed with the jeweller for production. A sample is made and at that point, I wear the sample for weeks at a time. Making sure the design is perfect, the metals last and the style is truly versatile with any wearer and any outfit.”

How did she feel when she heard that Justin Bieber was a fan? “Seeing Justin Bieber wearing one of my pieces was the most surreal moment. It still does not feel real,” she says.

“Our PR is handled in-house and we loan for so many celebrity placements and editorials and there is never a guarantee that the product will be used/placed.” Something she says comes with the territory. “You begin to feel less attached to that process and try to remain hopeful but you never know when things will work out and how the results will affect your business. I loaned to Justin’s stylist back in May of 2021 and sadly, the styles didn’t work out.”

But then. “A couple months later, I heard he was performing locally in LA and without any fear, I reached out to see if his stylist needed any pieces for the performance and sure enough he did,” she says. “I loaned with the usual understanding that this could possibly not work out. It wasn’t until that weekend, that I received a text saying ‘JB is wearing your Mushroom Chain’ and that’s when everything changed. I immediately cried with tears of excitement, happiness and relief that some of my hard work had paid off. Within minutes, the orders started flooding in and I had to quickly wipe away the tears and get to work.”

Joe Jonas is also an adoptee. Wear them layered; wear them solo, you’ll be charmed.
