Pete Davidson’s Met Gala jewellery is by sustainability-minded brand Or & Elle. When the American entertainer and Kim Kardashian made their Met Gala red carpet debut as a couple yesterday in New York, Davidson sparkled in bespoke high jewellery by Or & Elle.
For several generations a family-run company, Or & Elle is based in Antwerp. The Belgian city has long been a capital of the diamond industry and it is here that a team of six experts sourced and set lab-grown diamonds for Davidson’s bespoke commission.
Inspired by the classic elegance of John F. Kennedy, the jeweller created a diamond pin in just under one week. “The diamonds needed to be sourced within one morning,” says the brand’s co-founder Nicole Mhielson. “All our jewellery is completely made-to-order to avoid waste; this means we hold no stock.”
The American oak tree, a symbol of stability and power but also renewal and growth was chosen as a naturalistic theme. And so Davidson’s custom oak tree pin was cast from recycled gold in the shape of a vine, like a leaf falling from a tree. Each vine is set with pear-shaped diamonds totalling 15 gems and roughly 15 carats. Davidson worked with his stylist Britt Theodora, who had a hand in the jewellery’s design.
“We hand sketched the concepts to visualise the harmony of each piece,” says Nicole Mihelson, co-founder of Or & Elle of the process, which saw hundreds of carats of diamonds sourced for potential options. “Then we made the digital renderings (CADs). However, in the case of pear diamonds, it’s a circular process between designing and sourcing, because even pears of the same carat weight can have completely different length, width, and depth dimensions.”
Pete Davidson’s Met Gala jewellery meant another high-point for men wearing high jewellery on the red carpet.
