With the premiere of The Crown season 5 mere days away, naturally, our thoughts have turned to the breathtaking royal jewels that are soon to dazzle across our screens.

Unsurprisingly, Princess Diana’s sapphire ring is perhaps the piece we’re most excited to catch a glimpse of. Arguably the most famous engagement ring in the world, the sapphire sparkler was first debuted in 1981 when her engagement to Prince Charles was announced.

Designed by Garrard, the ring is of exceptional beauty with a surprising origin. Set on a band of white gold with 14 solitaire diamonds that surround a central 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire stone, the ring was inspired by a sapphire brooch Prince Albert commissioned Garrard to create for his future wife, Victoria, in 1840. Inherited by Prince Harry after Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997, the ring was eventually gifted to Prince William, who used it to propose to Kate Middleton in 2010.

If, like us, the storied tale of this fascinating engagement jewel has left you wanting your own sapphire piece, we’ve curated an edit of dazzling blue gems for your consideration, featuring the likes of Cartier, Harry Winston, Minka and, of course, Garrard.
