Why Ben Affleck chose a green diamond engagement ring for JLo

The story behind J Lo's special green engagement ring. Ben Affleck has proposed to Jennifer Lopez again, this time with a rare green 8.5 carat diamond. The couple announced their engagement via Lopez's official newsletter, OntheJLo.com

Jennifer Lopez has added another stunning diamond ring to the rocks that she’s got. The star announced her engagement to Affleck this past weekend via her Instagram account, and also through her newsletter, OntheJLo.com. One year after reconciling, and two decades after their first relationship, the stars have made it official once again, with Lopez sharing a video of her new green diamond engagement ring from Affleck.

“Saturday night while at my favourite place on earth (in the bubble bath), my beautiful love got on one knee and proposed,” the singer shared with her fans. “I was totally taken off guard and just looked in his eyes smiling and crying at the same time, trying hard to get my head around the fact that after 20 years this was happening all over again.”

The ring features an 8.5 carat natural green diamond central stone flanked by two white diamonds and set on a platinum band.

This isn’t the first time Affleck has presented Lopez with a rare diamond ring. Back in 2002, the actor famously proposed to her with a 6.1 carat pink diamond ring from Harry Winston estimated at USD$2.5million – another rare coloured diamond which then ignited a huge trend for pink engagement rings. At the time, Lopez called the ring “the most magnificent thing I’ve ever seen.”

And while only 0.01% of all coloured diamonds are pinks, Lopez’s latest engagement ring is rarer still. Along with red, green is one of the hardest colours of diamonds to find in the natural world. Stones with a vivid green hue are hardly ever found, with only about 300 examples known to exist over one carat in size. Vivid green diamonds above three carats in weight are generally only ever seen in museums. The diamond’s natural hue is the result of being exposed to radiation near the earth’s surface.

And as for why Affleck has picked green over pink this time? The colour holds a special meaning for Lopez. “I always say the color green is my lucky color,” Lopez revealed in her newsletter. “Maybe you can remember a certain green dress. I’ve realized there are many moments in my life where amazing things happened when I was wearing green. It may be a coincidence, maybe not. But as I took a better look, I realized there are no coincidences. ”

Owing to the extreme rarity of green diamonds, those hoping to emulate the star and choose a green engagement ring as an alternative to a traditional white diamond ring should be prepared for an exhaustive and very expensive search. Hirsh London currently has one platinum engagement ring set with a 1.13 carat radiant-cut fancy intense green diamond. Meanwhile, another exceptional fancy bluish-green diamond ring with a central stone of 3 carats will be up for auction during Sotheby Hong Kong’s Magnificent Jewels sale on April 29th. It is estimated to fetch between HK$24,000,000 – $30,000,000 (£2.34 million – £2.93 million).

No matter what your thoughts on the look of a green diamond engagement ring, after twenty years apart, it seems fittingly romantic that Lopez and Affleck have chosen to take their relationship to the next stage with a diamond so rare, there are few like it that exist in the world. Let’s hope green proves the luckiest of hues for the happy couple this time around.
