Tom Brady wears the Rolex Emoji Day-Date to Birmingham football game

Launched at this year's Watches & Wonders fair, Rolex's rare 'Emoji' timepiece is now slowly making the celebrity rounds. Tom Brady is the latest to sport the colourful watch, having just worn it to watch Birmingham City Football club

Back in February, when Tom Brady retired from the NFL after 23 seasons, who would have thought that the American would be soon be swapping one type of football for another?

But the former star quarterback has recently purchased a minority stake in Championship club Birmingham City FC, perhaps following in the Hollywood footsteps of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny, who purchased Wrexam FC in November 2020. And whilst visiting his new club earlier this week, Brady flashed a novel (and already hard to find) Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 in the maker’s proprietary Everose Gold, which was only launched at this year’s Watches & Wonders fair and quickly became one of the most talked-about timepieces at the event.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36, AKA the ‘Emoji’ or ‘Jigsaw’ watch, was launched at Watches & Wonders this year. Seen here in Everose Gold, which is the version Tom Brady wears.

Better known as the ‘Emoji’ or ‘Jigsaw’ Day-Date, the timepiece features a champlevé enamelled dial in the form of a puzzle, with each colourful piece meant to represent a key moment in life. Sounds simple, but the technique actually requires specialist work by an artisan, who carves the metal into shape and then fills it with coloured glass powder before it is fired. In the case of the Everose gold version Brady has just acquired, the background to the dial is a sunny orange colour.

On the dial itself, a small window at the 12 o’clock marker displays a daily inspirational word, such as ‘Happy,’ ‘Eternity’, ‘Gratitude’ or ‘Hope’, instead of the usual day of the week, whilst the aperture at the 3 o’clock reveals one of 31 emojis instead of the date. Each hour is represented by 10 baguette-cut sapphires in six different shades. The watch also comes in yellow gold or white gold with a sky blue dial base colour, like the version singer John Mayer recently bought.

Given that Brady will be hoping his investment, and stellar profile, might boost Birmingham FC’s goal-scoring prowess, perhaps seeing a little ‘Faith’ and perhaps a ‘heart’ or ‘kiss’ emoji on his wrist each day might help him along?
