What is the significance of Olexsandr Usyk’s cross necklace?

Olexsandr Usyk last night wore a pendant with a huge cross last night following his fight with Tyson Fury. The iconic cross was worn on a long silver pendant both before and after the incredible fight

Usyk is a very religious man and wears before and after his fight a thick heavy silver chain on which hangs a huge cross adorned with a crown. Olexsandr Usyk wore the necklace at the weigh in to the fight and when he entered the ring wearing traditional Cossack dress. Immediately after winning the fight one of his first acts was to put the necklace back on. Last night Olexsandr Usyk beat Tyson Fury to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion for the first time in twenty five years.

During the fight last night Olexsandr Usyk performed the “Hail Mary” in between rounds and the name Maria was also sewn into the back of the belt of his shorts.The three barred Cross is the traditional cross that a Ukrainian would wear and is also known as an Eastern cross or Orthodox cross, this has a special position in Ukrainian religious life. The cross is composed of three different bars across the cross, with the bottom arms sloping downwards. Since this is a time of war in Ukraine the three barred cross often signifies a memorial sign to fallen Ukrainian soldiers.

The cross that Usyk is a traditional cross with a crown on the top, the cross signifies the trials of this life, while the crown represents the reward in heaven. It is also worn in Christianity to signify Christ the King.
