Our July cover star, actress Harriet Slater, has spoken to us about what fans can expect from the highly-anticipated new Outlander spin-off, Blood of my Blood, how welcoming the Outlander cast have been and her love of Tiffany & Co. jewels.
The new show arrives in August and is the first prequel to the hit show. In the show, Slater plays the show’s lead, Ellen MacKenzie – the mother of Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan in Outlander).
Speaking about the new series, Slater said: “It’s basically a Romeo and Juliet story”, she explains. “She and Brian Fraser are from rival clans. It’s forbidden from the start.”
Jewellery plays a big part in the show – as it does in Outlander, and stories behind the jewellery that’s familiar to Outlander viewers also appears in the show.
The story of the freshwater pearl necklace that Jamie gave to Clare on their wedding day is told and it’s revealed as a wedding gift from Brian to Ellen. “It’s a lovely origin
story,” Slater says.

“There are also other jewellery pieces that play an important role in the story like the brooch with the MacKenzie clan motto Luceo Non Uro – ‘I shine, not burn.’ That’s such a big part of who Ellen is. She’s proud of her clan, but she’s not willing to sacrifice her identity.”
We also learn about the significance of the tusks that were a wedding gift to Ellen from Murtagh. “He’s obviously in love with her which is unrequited,” she explains.
Elsewhere in the cover interview, Slater talks about the cast of Outlander welcoming her to the show, the beauty of Scotland, where the show was filmed, and her love of Tiffany & Co. jewels.
Harriet Slater is one of four cover stars for the July issue of Something About Rocks, alongside the likes of Hip Hip icon, Slick Rick, legendary producer Swizz Beatz and Wednesday star, Georgie Farmer. You can order your copy of the magazine here.
