This year’s Cannes film festival has kicked off in suitably lavish style, with celebrities adorning their couture gowns with a glittering array of jewellery to hit La Croisette. In the spotlight? Dramatic high jewellery necklaces, dripping with diamonds or breathtaking coloured gemstones.

Julia Roberts, who was named ‘Godmother’ of the festival’s prestigious Trophée Chopard for 2022 arrived for the premiere of Armageddon Time wearing a custom Louis Vuitton tuxedo and an astonishing diamond necklace by Chopard. The piece was created in Fairmined-certified ethical 18 carat white and yellow gold, and centred around a rare yellow diamond weighing over 100 carats from the French Maison’s Red Carpet Collection.

Anne Hathaway, one of the stars of Armageddon Time, appeared at the same screening in an elegant, shimmering column dress by Armani Privé. She also exclusively debuted a dazzling necklace by Bulgari, which will form part of its upcoming “Eden and The Garden of Wonders” high jewellery collection later this summer. Hathaway’s ‘Mediterranean Reverie’ necklace is one of the most precious pieces ever created by the Roman jeweller, and is set with a rare 107.15 carat cushion-cut sapphire from Sri Lanka. Crafted in platinum, the piece also showcases an array of other sapphires and brilliant, pear-cut and pavé-set diamonds.

Meanwhile, French model Cindy Bruna embellished her powder pink tulle gown with a transformable high jewellery necklace from Chaumet. Called, ‘Les Mondes de Chaumet’, the piece is crafted from white and pink gold, set with pear-cut Padparadscha sapphires in a perfect blush hue, and Bruna wore it reversed, with the pendant suspended between her shoulder blades.

A back-to-front necklace was also a feature of Australian actress Katherine Langford’s shimmering ensemble. Bedecked in a glittering Prada dress with dramatic bow, Langford added extra sparkle with Piaget‘s Limelight Sunlight Journey High Jewellery necklace, in white gold and diamonds, but worn with its cushion-cut emerald worn at the nape of her neck to emphasise the spectacular bow on her gown.

The actress Deepika Padukone made it a diamonds-only affair when she adorned her custom scarlet gown by Louis Vuitton with a white gold and diamond necklace from Cartier’s 2018 Coloratura High Jewellery collection. Its central pendant contains 37.27-carat marquise-cut diamond.

Diane Kruger, meanwhile, opted for the modernist waves of Chaumet’s Ondulation necklace, from its 2020 High Jewellery offering, Perspectives. Inspired by the waves seen in deconstructionist architecture from the 1980s, the necklace is composed of 950 gold ingots and has a 30.35-carat indicolite tourmaline nestled within its shimmering gold mesh.
