Yesterday (June 19th) ‘Brat’ Summer star Charli XCX married her fiancé George Daniel, drummer of the band 1975, in a low-key and intimate wedding ceremony at Hackney Town Hall in London. Intriguingly, the singer’s wedding jewellery was similarly understated.
Going against the showbiz trend for extravagant wedding and engagement bands, Charli XCX’s wedding ring has been valued at a relatively modest $10-15,000. Seemingly crafted from twisted bands of platinum – much like a ‘Russian’ or trinity wedding ring style – its style provided a cool contrast to her dainty, diamond-set engagement band (which has previously been valued at $15-20,000).
Charli’s wedding look was typical of the rebellious singer, who opted for a corseted, ivory-coloured mini-length wedding dress by punk’s high priestess design, Vivienne Westwood, plus signature oversized black sunglasses for her big day. The 32-year-old star had previewed the bridal look in a TikTok video – in which she walks into a room dressed in her bridal ensemble and promptly struts out again – posted with a cheeky caption that read: “When george isn’t crying when he sees me walking down the aisle.” Another caption reassuringly read: “Luckily he did xx.”
The British musicians met whilst working together back in 2021 on the no Rome track ‘Spinning’, and confirmed their engagement in November 2023.
Charli, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, has been creating hit-worthy tracks for well over a decade (such as 2012’s anthemic ‘I Love It’) but was catapulted into the mainstream spotlight last year with her sixth studio album, BRAT, which boasted bold, lime green cover art and roster of audacious, attention-grabbing beats such as ‘360’, ‘Von Dutch’ and ‘Sympathy is a knife’. At the time, the singer described the album as a celebration of “me, my flaws, my f-ups, my ego all rolled into one.” Since then, ‘brat’ has become a byword for accepting yourself and feeling comfortable in your own skin, including all of your mistakes.
