A little over a year since Francesca Amfitheatrof exited Louis Vuitton, where she had served as artistic director of watches and jewellery for seven years, the designer has announced that she is officially back – and making quite the splash with a diamond-studded smartwatch.
Now at the head of her own cross-platform company, Amfitheatrof Studio, whose remit will extend from jewellery and watched to interiors and technology, the designer has announced her first collaboration is with Chinese tech giant Huawei, on its Huawei Watch Ultimate Design Spring Edition smartwatch.
“Taking inspiration from the Fibonacci sequence, it is hand-set with 99 natural diamonds and diamond cut sapphire crystals and embodies luxury, beauty and the ultimate in smart functionality,” the designer said via her new Amfitheatrof Studio Instagram account.
Created especially for women, the 42.9mm timepiece is the first from the maker’s high-end ULTIMATE DESIGN umbrella, and features health and fitness features like blood pressure and heart rate monitoring, temperature sensor, cycle and sleep tracking, and mood tracking. It’s also capable of being linked via bluetooth to compatible smart cars, allowing it to check the status of a user’s car and lock and unlock its doors.

This isn’t the first time wearable smart tech has gone luxe. In 2016, the now-defunct jeweller de GRISOGONO teamed up with Samsung on a high end pink gold smartwatch encrusted in black and white diamonds, and in 2020 Hublot unveiled a collector’s edition of its Big Bang E smartwatch that came with a diamond-set titanium case. Meanwhile, Fitbit already offers premium versions of its wrist-borne health trackers on gold bracelets, and the Joule Smart Earring purports to track everything from heart rate to calories burned via its earring backing.
What’s novel is that this is the first new project from a designer whose previous remit has been high jewellery and fine jewellery designs for traditional maisons like Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. Judging by Amfitheatrof’s previous obsessions with the nature of time, which she channelled into some of Louis Vuitton‘s largest ever high jewellery collections to date, we’re betting it certainly won’t be the last.
