Before Spain beat Argentina and were crowned 2026 World Cup champions last night, the world got its first ever Super Bowl-style half time show – which packed quite a lot into its 11 minute run time.
An eclectic who’s-who of starry musical names took to the central stage at New York’s New Jersey Stadium. Amongst a rendition of the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army (by none other than The Muppet Show’s house band, the Electric Mayhem), a quick blast of Dynamite performed by BTS, a shortened version of the official 2026 World Cup song, Dai Dai, by an ebullient Shakira and Burna Boy, plus an appearance by Coldplay, who sang Believe in Love alongside a children’s choir (oh, and an appearance by Justin Bieber on the guitar, singing Everything Hallelujah, with a cameo by Ted Lasso) there was a performance by Madonna, who arrived at the stadium between Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.
Singing a reworked version of her 2000 hit Music (with Disco Inferno raging in the background), the Queen of Pop rolled into the stadium on a buggy driven by the Brazilian footballing legends.
Fresh from promoting her latest album, Confessions On A Dance Floor pt II, the singer appeared in a glamorous, sports-inspired ensemble, complete with a bedazzled referee’s whistle around her neck.
Alongside a shimmering pink and purple jacket (emblazoned with ‘Madonna’ and the number 10), a corset and knee-high lace-up boots, she donned a pair of crystal-set fingerless gloves, sunglasses and a matching crystal choker necklace by Giovanna Engelbert at Swarovski, plus a pair of huge sparkling hoop earrings. “MUSIC makes the people come together. Epic Moment @fifaworldcup. Everybody get up and DANCE!” she said on social media.
Elsewhere, Jennifer Hudson also enchanted the crowds with her rendition of the US national anthem during the closing ceremony, wearing an all-white outfit and a Bird on a Rock brooch by Jean Schlumberger, plus diamond earrings and rings, all by Tiffany & Co.
