Jason Statham is back on the big screen killing bad guys – this time on the high seas as he uncovers a human trafficking operation in his new film, Mutiny.
In the action packed movie, Statham plays Cole Reed, a former policeman who becomes the personal bodyguard of Thai billionaire, Tibu Campallo. Early on in the film, Tibu gifts Cole a Rolex Submariner No Date, describing it appropriately as a watch for a man of action. From that point on, Statham wears the watch throughout the film and can be seen prominently in several shots.
The Submariner, originally a dive watch, and now worn by a former Commonwealth Games diver in Mutiny, later plays an integral role in the plot after Reed gets trapped in the cargo hold of a ship.
The classic watch, this model made out of ceramic rather than stainless steel, is used as intended as a toolwatch with Statham deploying the bracelet clasp as a screwdriver to get himself out of an air vent.
It’s not the first Rolex Submariner Statham has proven to be a fan of. Last year, at Burberry’s fashion show, Statham turned up wearing a 5514 COMEX Submariner.
The watch was made for deep sea diving company Compagnie Maritime D’Experties in the 1970’s for their crew and with Statham being a Commonwealth Games diver, who has used his skills in films like The Meg, it’s only right it ends up on his wrist. Never released commercially, it’s one of the rarest Submariner models and on the rare chance they pop up on the secondary market, worth more than £50,000.
An avid watch collector, Statham also owns a Rolex Daytona Paul Newman and could have been said to be his favourite watch around a decade ago as it kept popping up on his Instagram, while he has also been pictured in an array of other Rolex’s such as the extremely cool Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655 “Steve McQueen”, best known for its bright orange hour hand. Despite being nicknamed the Steve McQueen, there is actually no proof the Hollywood icon ever wore the watch.
Away from Rolex, Statham has proven to be a big fan of both Panerai and IWC, frequently wearing both brands at public events and on screen. If you ever see an IWC or Panerai in a Statham movie, it is from his own personal collection with the actor seemingly meticulous about the watches he picks out for his characters.
In The Meg, Statham appropriately wore his own IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition La Cumbre Volcano, a highly limited edition piece that has a water resistance of 300 metres which means he can battle prehistoric killer sharks on the open seas without worrying that his watch is going to disintegrate.
