Indian luxury house Sabyasachi will unveil the first collection from its multi-year partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art at New York Fashion Week today. The collaboration gives Sabyasachi access to more than 5,000 years of art and culture within The Met’s collection, which will provide the source material for future jewellery, accessories and clothing.
Its inaugural chapter is a high jewellery collection inspired by the art of the Byzantine Empire and the cultures connected to it through trade. Sabyasachi has drawn on objects, motifs and techniques represented across The Met’s Greek and Roman, Medieval and Islamic art departments. Imperial medallions, architectural details, religious iconography, sculpture and stonework have been reinterpreted as contemporary jewels. Every piece has been designed, developed and handcrafted in India through Sabyasachi’s network of artisans.
The agreement expands the Indian house’s position in global luxury while adding a major jewellery name to The Met’s licensing programme. Proceeds from licensed products support the museum’s collection, conservation, study and presentation.
“This collaboration is about engaging with one of the world’s great collections of art and the opportunity to reinterpret centuries of creativity through contemporary design,” said Sabyasachi founder and creative director Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Stephen Mannello, head of retail and global licensing at The Met, said working with Sabyasachi would allow the museum to present historic works through a new creative perspective.
The launch also underlines Sabyasachi’s ambitions beyond fashion, as it continues to build its high jewellery and wider lifestyle businesses around Indian craftsmanship. Sabyasachi generated revenue of approximately ₹650 crore ($68 million) in FY2026, according to company filings and separate reporting by the Economic Times. Jewellery, launched in 2017, now reportedly accounts for around a third of sales, making it a central pillar of the business rather than an adjacent category.
Following today’s runway presentation, the collection will be sold through Sabyasachi’s New York flagship at 160 Christopher Street, its other international stores and selected specialist retailers worldwide. Further collections will explore additional areas of The Met’s holdings across jewellery, fashion and accessories.
