Sylvester Stallone is probably the biggest and most notable fan of Panerai in the world. He has worn the Italian brand since the mid-1990’s, just as they were coming to market after only being available to military personnel.
He has since gone on to wear Panerai in numerous films including all instalments of The Expendables series. He also wore a Panerai Luminor Submersible when he brought Rambo back to the big screen in 2008.
There have been differing views over exactly which Panerai Stallone is wearing in the film with many pointing towards the Marina Militaire but the actual piece worn during the movie is made by the prop department.
Headed up by Kent H. Johnson, the watch was created in-house by the production to resemble a real-life Panerai Luminor and features a stainless steel case.
Stallone wears the watch throughout the movie, including in all of the controversial action scenes set in Burma. And now, a fan has the chance to get their hands on it as the watch comes to auction through Propstore.
They have placed an estimate on the watch of between $4,000 and $8,000.
Other cinema-related watches entered in the auction include a Hamilton Ventura Chrono worn by Will Smith in Men in Black 3. In the sci-fi-comedy series, Hamilton are the standard issue watch for MIB agents with them worn by Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in all three films with an estimate of between $6,000 and $12,000 placed on this one.
Fans and collectors will also have the opportunity to get their hands on the Breitling worn by Bruce Willis in The Last Boy Scout. This piece came from the personal collection of prop master Mike Papac, however the watch does have a dead battery and shows significant wear. The auctioneers expect it to sell for between $2,000 and $4,000.
The late, great Richard Attenborough’s Pulsar V336-7040 that he wore throughout Jurassic Park is also on the auction block but is not functional and contains a broken band. An estimate has been placed on the watch of between $3,000 and $6,000.
Lastly, a digital watch that is worn by IMF agents Tom Cruise and Emilio Estevez in the opening scenes of Mission: Impossible is also becoming available. A custom build by the prop department especially for the film, the watch is made from rubber and features a futuristic digital face. There’s no indication this is the exact one worn by Cruise or Estevez but there is still an estimate of between $3,000 and $6,000 on it.
