A date night for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce earlier this week caused a flurry of excitement amongst jewellery spotters worldwide. Whilst stepping out at Honey’s cocktail bar in Brooklyn, Swift chose to embellish her glamorous silk dress by Maria Lucia Hohan Allar with a shimmering suite of opal jewellery.
This set, it turns out, is a 22K gold, opal and diamond-set suite by American jeweller Darlene De Sedle – the first time she’s been photographed wearing the entire set in public.

What’s more, the jewels were previously owned by none other than Swift’s favourite Hollywood icon, Elizabeth Taylor, who purchased them directly from the designer in 1999. The full set is comprised of a pair of bracelets, a ring, and triple-strand chandelier earrings set with luminous Australian opals and diamonds.
Later, the suite was part of the historic 2011 auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s extraordinary jewellery collection at Christie’s, which raised $116 million (£74.9 million) for The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation that she established in 1991. The event was deemed “one of the most extraordinary sales” Christie’s had ever held.

The jewels hadn’t been heard of again until last year, when they were bought by family-owned jewellery company Fox Estate Jewelry. Owner Adam Fox took to Instagram to detail his surprise and delight at seeing the opal suite, which he had sold on to ‘sports agent’ in December 2025, being worn by Taylor Swift and shared the story of how he came to sell the precious jewels.
“This is a very interesting story that almost seems made up, if we didn’t have photographic evidence. We bought a set, beginning or middle of last year, from the Elizabeth Taylor Collection that was sold through Christie’s in 2011. Fast forward, we sold that set during Christmas time, end of 2025. And it was weird ’cause this was a six-figure set, and it seemed like it was a sports agent that bought it. Everything checked out, it was shipped. Everything was fine….I wake up this morning to an Instagram post, and it turns out that it was bought either by, or for, Taylor Swift. There’s pictures of her wearing them….” he shared in an Instagram video.

“So I don’t know if [the set] was bought by Travis Kelce for Taylor Swift…I’m just kind of connecting the dots because it was a sports agent…It’s always just amazing to see how this [set] was worn, owned by Elizabeth Taylor, disappeared for years, and then it was subsequently bought by one of the most photographed people in the world. Amazing.”
Swift has openly shared her admiration for Elizabeth Taylor, the subject of her hit 2025 song of the same name.
“She fought for artists’ rights. She was exploited in so many ways and yet she kept her humanity. She kept her humour. She kept her passion for life,” the singer recounted to The New York Times earlier this month, describing the moment she was inspired to write the song whilst riding in the car with Kelce.

“I was just going on and on. I’m like, her eyes were violet. Some people said they were blue, some people said they were violet… And we arrive, we get home, he gets out of the car and I’m just in my head, I’m like, this intrusive melody of like, ‘I’d cry my eyes violet, Elizabeth Taylor.‘ And I’m just like scrambling to open my record app on my phone,” she added.
Was Travis Kelce was secretly taking notes of his own whilst listening to his fiancée “going on and on” about her love for Elizabeth Taylor?
