F.P. Journe watches are always a moment when they come up for auction and a number of pieces are set to come to market at Sotheby’s next Important Watches sale on June 15.
In what must be a first for both F.P. Journe and watch auctions, a personal piece owned and worn by NFL legend Tom Brady is set to hit the auction block.
The Vagabondage was originally conceptualised by Journe in 2004 with a special one-off piece that was a personal commission for a charity event. Taking the design, which omits many of the typical Journe hallmarks including their signature on the dial, the brand launched the Vagabondage II in 2010, manufacturing just 69 pieces in platinum though some special commissions were also produced.
From the collection of none other than Tom Brady, this limited-edition F.P. Journe Vagabondage II features a distinctive wandering digital-time display with jumping hours and minutes, paired with a notably unsigned dial.

This particular watch was made in 2017 with Brady a noted collector of both watches and the F.P. Journe brand, once labelling their watches “masterpieces”. It is presumably a one-off piece commissioned by the former New England Patriot and features a mechanical movement with a digital display.
Visually dynamic, two rotating discs tell the time and display a watch constantly in motion. The jumping hours movement is also a sight to behold on the piece and an example of horology as performance.
Though worn by Brady, the watch is still in excellent condition and has all of its original packaging and documentation. Sotheby’s have put an estimate on the watch of between $400,000 and $800,000 which feels a little on the light side given the way F.P. Journe’s have been selling of late and this one comes from a vaunted celebrity, known for his love of the brand.
The other headline grabbing F.P. Journe in the auction is 2008’s Chronomètre à Résonance, which is arguably the watchmaker’s most famous creation. Taking inspiration from the work of King Louis XVI’s personal clockmaker Antide Janvier, this F.P. Journe has two different oscillators telling two different times.
A movement that was in the works by Journe for nearly 20 years, he finally perfected it in 2000, the year of the first Chronomètre. This version dates from 2008 and the reference went out of production just two years later.
Because of the provenance and rarity of the piece, Sotheby’s have put a wide estimate of between $400,000 and $800,000, though F.P. Journe watches are quickly developing a reputation for going far above their expectations at auction.
The most notable F.P. Journe to ever come to market is Francis Ford Coppola’s self-named collaboration with the Geneva based company. Co-designed by the Apocalypse Now director, the watch is a genuine one-of-a-kind and was considered the crown jewel in Coppola’s vast collection of timepieces.
After admittedly losing tens of millions of dollars on his latest film, Megalopolis, Coppola turned to his watch collection to raise some funds, placing the watch, alongside some other pieces, up for auction last year.
When the bidding was finally finished, the anonymous buyer was victorious to the sum of $10.8 million, ten times the original estimate, becoming the most expensive F.P. Journe ever sold.
