A year after Tiffany & Co. launched new fine and high jewellery collections inspired by its iconic Bird on a Rock, the New York jeweller has once again reimagined its emblematic avian motif for a fresh flock of jewellery pieces.
Inspired by Jean Schlumberger’s original Bird on a Rock brooch from 1965, and reimagined under Natalie Verdeille, Tiffany’s Senior Vice President – Chief Artistic Officer of Jewellery and High Jewellery, these creations explore the whimsical feathered creature through new interpretations.
While a new set of fine jewellery pieces showcase figurative birds embellished with details drawn from the archive, two other new collections delve into the concept of flight.
Wings, a fine jewellery line, interprets the symbolic power of flight as abstract sets of wings in 18K gold and platinum – honouring Schlumberger’s predilection for mixing precious metals. Feathers, a novel high jewellery suite, distills the bird motif down to its plumage, with sculptural compositions of diamond feathers.
Introduced in 1965, Jean Schlumberger’s whimsical Bird on a Rock design was said to be inspired by a yellow cockatoo he encountered whilst travelling across Asia and the Caribbean. The designer was endlessly fascinated by nature and what he called “the irregularity of the universe”, and journeyed extensively to Bali, India, Thailand, and Guadeloupe, where he had a home.
He drew, sketched and painted everywhere, drawing inspiration from his surroundings. The first yellow and white diamond version of the Bird on a Rock sat on a chunk of lapis lazuli, and was bought by Bunny Mellon – the renowned society hostess who became a client and friend.
Much later, the infamous 128.54-carat Tiffany Diamond was re-mounted into Schlumberger’s emblematic design at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and was displayed for decades at the jeweller’s Fifth Avenue flagship.
In recent years, the enigmatic bird has become a favourite jewel for red carpet appearances, adorning everyone from Teyana Taylor and Emily Blunt to Michael B Jordan and Thai actor Win Metawin. Just last month, Jennifer Hudson wore Tiffany’s platinum Bird on a Rock earrings to perform during the lengthy closing ceremony at the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
Now, Tiffany & Co’s latest creations promise to show off the Bird on a Rock in a whole new light. The fine jewellery pendants and earrings are hand sculpted and hand polished in 18K yellow gold, with diamonds of multiple sizes are set by hand in a nonlinear layout. Elsewhere, the new Wings collection includes a narrow necklace, ring, drop earrings, articulated bracelet, pendant and three metal-only rings in 18K yellow or rose gold and platinum that showcase the contours of the wing and its distinctive silhouette.
Finally, the new Feathers collection evokes the softness and fluidity of feathers in precious materials, with designs that were developed over a span of nearly three years. Engraved elements echo the intricate textures found on the original Bird on a Rock design, while 18K yellow gold accents create depth, contrast and dimension.
