Mo Salah has officially found a new club – and the footballer wore a plush Richard Mille watch for the occasion.
After nine years at Liverpool, the Egyptian forward and his longtime team opted to part ways with much speculation about Salah’s future. Eschewing a move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia, Salah opted for Turkish side Trabzonspor, where he was unveiled to fans yesterday.
Surrounded by fans as he underwent a medical in Istanbul, Salah was seen wearing a Richard Mille RM 67-02 with an orange strap. Retailing for around £300,000, that’s an awful lot of money to most people but probably around a week’s wages to Salah.
A longtime fan of the brand, Salah’s RM 67-02 is sporty and ultra lightweight, coming in at just 32 grams, making it Richard Mille’s lightest self-winding watch. The bright colours are also a result of collaborations with various sporting figures with this colour combination inspired by French rally driver Sébastien Ogier. Salah has often relied on a Richard Mille for the big occasions. When he re-signed with Liverpool just over twelve months ago, he was seen wearing a bright blue RM 17-02 – an interesting given the colour of their arch rivals, Everton. He also wore a RM 30-01 for when he put out a video revealing that he would be departing Liverpool less than a year after the aforementioned contract extension.
With the World Cup, it’s been a big year for footballers and watches.
Salah’s former rival at Manchester City, Erling Haaland, has one of the biggest collections out there and he showcased a number during the World Cup in America, Mexico and Canada. Like Salah, Haaland has eyes for Richard Mille and after returning from the World Cup after defeat to England, the Norwegian striker unwound by holidaying in Sicily accompanied by a RM 55-01 in white. Only released in April of this year, the piece has a retail value of £160,000 but due to their scarcity, the second hand market is already out of control with the 55-01 already going for around seven times that.
Drake also caught Richard Mille fever during the summer, being spotted in a RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur when he attended the match between Portugal and Croatia in his native Toronto. Only 30 of the Tourbillon Fleur have ever been made and Drizzy, with his keen eye for brash and complex timepieces, made sure he laid his hands on one. Originally retailing for a smudge less than $300,000, the watch is thought to be worth around ten times that on the rare occasion they come to market.
David Beckham, who has dominated much of the sporting calendar this summer as he jetted across the world between the World Cup and Wimbledon, has put his full array of Tudor watches on display with none better than the newly released Black Bay Chrono Bumblebee.
