Sylvester Stallone has long had arguably the best watch collection in Hollywood. Even after selling off a number of his Holy Grail pieces a few years ago, his watch box is still bursting at the seams with some of the best pieces money can buy.
Hot on the promo trail for his autobiography, The Steps, Stallone stopped by the likes of NBC and Fox for a series of televised interviews. And any horological enthusiast would have immediately noticed what was on his wrist – a Rolex Daytona with a Tiffany blue dial.
Never made available to the wider public, this watch was only developed last year but as an out of catalogue piece only and is considered one of the rarest pieces manufactured by Rolex in recent years.
This reference has otherwise only seen in public on the wrist of Roger Federer’s wife and is made from 18 karat white gold with a turqoise stone dial which has affectionately earned it the nickname Tiffany Blue. The bezel also glistens with trapeze cut diamonds while eight baguette cut diamonds serve as hourmarkers.
Given the watch was never made available at retail and only optioned to Rolex’s best customers in very limited numbers, it’s hard to put a value on the watch but on the secondary market, you can probably obtain one for a little over £600,000.
Stallone has long been known for his close association with Panerai after popularising the Italian brand with his 1996 disaster movie, Daylight.
He has since gone on to wear Panerai in numerous films including all instalments of The Expendables series. He also wore a Panerai when he brought Rambo back to the big screen in 2008.
There have been differing views over exactly which Panerai Stallone is wearing in the film with many pointing towards the Marina Militaire but the actual piece worn during the movie is made by the prop department and it recently became available to purchase at auction.
Headed up by Kent H. Johnson, the watch was created in-house by the production to resemble a real-life Panerai Luminor and features a stainless steel case.
Stallone wears the watch throughout the movie, including in all of the controversial action scenes set in Burma, with it being seen prominently during the film’s infamous 50 cal scene.
Available through Propstore, they put an estimate of between $4000 and $8000 on the watch but it just surpassed that, selling for exactly $8820 earlier this year.
