After plenty of speculation (when will it be released? Will it be all gold?) following a teaser on social media, Omega and Swatch are debuting the all new Mission to Moonshine MoonSwatch, a year after the spectacular launch of the colourful co-branded timepieces.
For those who are still queuing round the block to try and get their hands on one of last year’s elusive and much-hyped MoonSwatches (Mission to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) be warned – this brand new Moonswatch might be even tougher to track down.

Launching simultaneously in London, Milan, Tokyo and Zurich, the new Mission to the Moon is an evolution of last year’s model, which takes as its inspiration the legendary Omega Speedster Moonwatch (the timepiece that accompanied Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong to the lunar surface in 1969).
The latest version now contains a sleek seconds hand coated with Omega’s proprietary Moonshine Gold, and the brand’s own 18K yellow gold alloy – the only MoonSwatch model that will boast the metallic accent. This special seconds hand was actually produced during the February full moon, as stated on an actual certificate which accompanies the watch.

And despite not being specifically named as a ‘limited edition’ piece, the pace of production of these shimmering gold second hands (“Only one day,” according to a brand spokesperson) means numbers will be extremely tight.
The pieces, which retail at £250, will first go on sale in London, Zurich, Milan and Tokyo – cities chosen for their ‘special association’ with gold. “For example, we chose London because this is were the price of gold is fixed on a global level, and Paradeplatz [in Zurich] because of the banks and gold reserves,” the spokesperson added, hinting that more cities could be added to the stockist list later on in the year.
If last year’s round-the-block queues for MoonSwatches is anything to go by, this precious new addition is also destined to rocket into the record books. Prepare for lift off…
