We’re well underway with the annual red carpet appearances for awards season and, judging by the fabulous A-list looks we’ve seen so far, statement jewellery has undergone quite a shift over the last few seasons.
It’s always been about making an impact (and adding a touch of shimmer to a designer suit or dress) but whether it’s been a conscious decision or not, pieces that fit perfectly within the frame of a mobile phone screen or social media grid have definitely seen a big rise in popularity.
Case in point? The continuing preference of collar and choker necklaces, as well as diamond drop earrings and lapel pins, both for men and women. Gone are the dramatically long sautoirs of yesteryear (unless they’re used to emphasis a backless gown, and even then they still need to fit within the confines of a social media ‘square’), and dainty, layered up pieces that just don’t show up well without a mega zoom function or professional-quality flash.
Don’t just take our word for it. Here, we’ve rounded up the 5 new statement jewellery pieces that we’ve spotted doing the red carpet rounds.
The Collar or Choker Necklace

Fitting closely around the neck or sitting just on the collar bones, the shorter necklace has definitely seen a resurgence, from what we’ve seen on the red carpet and also the couture runways lately.
Cartier, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Boucheron all showed off haute jewellery collections filled with collarbone-grazing styles this season. And there’s surely more to follow this summer…
The Fabulous Brooch(es)

Timothée Chalamet, Ke Huy Kwan, Michael B Jordan, Barry Koeghan, Rami Malek…the list of men in brilliant brooches is seemingly endless right now. And we’re here for it. Women, too, have always known the headline-grabbing power of a brooch – the late Queen Elizabeth II knew all about the subtle messages that a well-placed pin could have, as do many of her royal family members.
The Diamond Drop Earrings

There’s simply nothing better for casting a flattering glow on your face than a pair of diamond drop earrings. Not to mention the fact that white diamonds absolutely go with everything, so no matter which designer gown your stylist manages to bag for you on the night, you can rest assured that your earrings will match. Plus, they subtly elongate the look of your neck by drawing onlookers’ gazes downward. Who doesn’t love that?
The Hair Jewel

No one owned the red carpet last year like Michaela Coel did at the Met Gala. With statement gold earrings and a hair jewel by British designer Emefa Cole, the Black Panther star ensured all eyes were on her from every single angle.
The Multi-Finger Rings

Eye-catching high jewellery rings stacked on lots of different fingers or a single statement piece that goes right over your whole hand – whichever of these you pick, you’re guaranteed some excellent photographic mileage, as proven by Ariana Greenblatt at the Golden Globes this year when she upped the ante on her simple tuxedo with fistfuls of gleaming Chopard diamond rings.
