Wizkid debuted Chanel’s newest watch while attending the spring/ summer fashion shows in Paris this week. Around his neck, the Nigerian Afrobeats singer sported the latest iteration of the French luxury brand’s Première timepiece, the Première Sound.
Born in 1990 in a suburb of Lagos as Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, Wizkid became the first Afro Pop artist to feature in the Guinness World Records for his contribution to the hit song ‘One Dance’.
At the 64th Grammy Awards in 2021, he received two nominations for his album ‘Made in Lagos’ and his single ‘Essence’ featuring Justin Bieber. He has released five studio albums with a new album due to be released later this year.
The original Chanel Première watch launched in 1987 and was modelled as an homage to the No.5 fragrance bottle with its octagonal stopper.
The new Première Sound pays homage to the past while updating the watch for a contemporary audience. And who better to showcase the new watch than Wizkid, a huge collector of watches who also makes his own jewellery?
The Première watch has been reworked as a chic sautoir necklace, combining the maison’s intertwined handbag chain strap with a watch and wired headphones resulting in a watch-cum-headphones timepiece.
The quartz watch has been designed with a 26mm steel case coated in 18K gold and a black lacquered octagonal dial, complete with a steel crown also coated in gold and set with an onyx cabochon.
A smart update of Chanel’s classic timepiece, Master & Dynamic, a high-end audio company, collaborated with the French luxury brand meaning the matching black and gold earphones have been engineered to provide high-quality sound and eliminate external noises.
They are paired with a remote control that allows the wearer to execute different functions, including play and pause, answer and hang up, skip forward and skip back, and more. The earphones can also be removed if needed.
