Panerai have unveiled their new interpretation of the classic Luminor – the Marina PAM01707.
While the watch is clearly still a Luminor and harks back to design elements from the 1960’s such as the sandwich dial and luminous numerals, Panerai have also inserted some modern twists on the model.
The biggest change is the case is made from lightweight Carbotech, a composite made by Panerai from carbon fibre and polymer. The material creates an ultra-lightweight watch that is also perfect for diving, weighing just 100 grams, despite its enormous 44mm case.
The dial of the Luminor Marina is a matte black but features Panerai’s Super-LumiNova technology which ensures visibility whatever the level of light. Panerai have also removed the date display from the dial, bringing the look closer to some of its older military watches.
The watch is powered by the P.9010 automatic calibre which is made up of 200 individual components and beats 28,800 per hour.
The Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01707 is available at a retail price of £13,100 and can be purchased now.
A special kind of Panerai is coming up for auction next month.
Sylvester Stallone is as responsible for making the wider world aware of Panerai as anybody, famously wearing their a Luminor in his 1996 film, Daylight, and in many publicity appearances leading up to its release, helping transform the brand from little known military supplier to horological powerhouse.
He has since gone on to become an avid collector of Panerai and has been seen wearing their watches in a number of films, including The Expendables series.
He also wore a Panerai when he brought Rambo back to the big screen in 2008.
There have been differing views over exactly which Panerai Stallone is wearing in the film with many pointing towards the Marina Militaire but the actual piece worn during the movie is made by the prop department.
Headed up by Kent H. Johnson, the watch was created in-house by the production to resemble a real-life Panerai Luminor and features a stainless steel case.
Stallone wears the watch throughout the movie, including in all of the controversial action scenes set in Burma. And now, a fan has the chance to get their hands on it as the watch comes to auction through Propstore.
They have placed an estimate on the watch of between $4,000 and $8,000, which feels a bit conservative given its association with Stallone and how his Panerai’s have previously sold at auction.
The aforementioned Panerai Luminor Logo Stallone wore in Daylight sold for more than $200,000 in 2020 the Luminor Submersible that featured in The Expendables 2 was auctioned off for $96,000 in 2024.
While the Rambo watch doesn’t have the providence of those two, $8,000 feels very cheap for a Stallone worn Panerai.
