As the future king of England, you’d think Prince William might have access to an impressive range of luxurious watches (his brother, Prince Harry, in known to have a penchant for high-end watches, such as a Rolex Explorer II and customised Breitling Aerospace Advantage). And yet, the royal constantly reaches for a very practical time teller at every opportunity: the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M (ref. 2561.80.00).
Equipped with a dark blue, wave-inspired dial design and a dark blue bezel, the quartz-powered watch is actually very modest and understated piece of kit. Designed with diving in mind, it boasts a 300m water resistance, a helium valve to release gas during decompression and vivid luminescent markers to allow for crisp time-telling in the deep.
It’s the perfect, pared-back watch for a Royal Air Force helicopter search and rescue pilot (which Prince William qualified as in 2010), and has accompanied the Prince everywhere, including black tie events, military-related outings, Wimbledon, Royal Ascot, the Commonwealth Games, and even to his own wedding to Catherine Middleton in 2011.
Practicality aside, there’s also a sentimental reason behind the Prince’s favourite watch. It was given to him whilst he was still a student at Eton College by his late mother, Princess Diana, and it serves as a poignant reminder of his family ties.
Though of course the watch is Swiss, it does have some illustrious links to another famous Brit: James Bond. First launched in 1993, the Seamaster Diver 300M first became associated with the 007 franchise when it appeared on the wrist of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond in the 1995 film GoldenEye.
Tough enough to withstand Bond’s action sequences, yet still handsome enough to wear with his dinner jacket, it was a great match for MI6 agent. Omega has partnered with the Bond films ever since, and the Seamaster Diver 300M remains one of the maker’s most recognisable and popular timepieces to this day.
