In a world of giant, multi-carat celebrity engagement rings, Dolly Parton’s modest 0.5-carat diamond ring became a symbol of her intensely private relationship with Carl Dean, her husband of almost 60 years. Read all about it below.

In stark contrast to her glittering, rhinestone-studded stage outfits and elaborate costume jewels, Dolly Parton’s own engagement ring from Carl Dean, her husband of 58 years, was a fairly modest jewel – and yet it was one of the singer-songwriter’s most loved and treasured possessions.
The musical icon, who passed away on August 25, 2026 at the age of 80, met Dean at the Wishy Washy Laundromat on her first day in Nashville in 1964. Two years later, the couple got engaged and sealed the deal with a 0.5-carat diamond ring purchased from Sears using Dean’s mother’s store credit, as they could not afford to buy it themselves – instead, they arranged to pay her back in monthly instalments. They wed in a private ceremony in May 1966, when Parton was 20 and Dean was 23.
Later, as her fortune began to grow and she could afford more jewellery, Parton added an engraved wedding band to her ring stack, inscribed with the date of their wedding: May 30, ’66.
In 2012, the ‘Jolene’ singer revealed in an interview with Local 3 News that her then-manager, Fred Foster, had advised against the engagement. “He asked me not to get married. He said it’ll make it so much harder if you’re married with all this promotion,” Parton explained. “My mother-in-law had already sent out invitations. It broke her heart because I said we had to call the wedding off.”
Despite Foster’s disapproval, Parton and Dean secretly eloped and got married on May 30th 1966 in Ringgold, Georgia, with just Parton’s mother, Avie Lee Parton, in attendance, along with the pastor and his wife, who served as a witness. “I never really felt like I had the wedding that we really wanted,” the singer told PEOPLE Magazine in 2018, after she and Dean renewed their vows to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. “He got all dressed up and I got all dressed up. Fifty years is a long time for anything, and I felt that we needed to do something to commemorate this. It’s been a good 50 years and I don’t know how many more years we’ll have left.”
The singer also revealed that she and Dean finally upgraded their wedding rings in honour of their golden anniversary. “We had a wedding with all of the stuff we didn’t have before, with the beautiful suit and with my beautiful gown, and then we had these rings made, and we both paid for them. He paid half, and I paid half,” she said at the time. The singer added that while she could have afforded a larger diamond, a five-carat diamond didn’t “fit right,” leading her to choose a three-carat stone instead.
After 58 years of marriage, Dean passed away on 3rd March, 2025. “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” Parton wrote on Instagram at the time. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
Although Dolly Parton eventually amassed a fortune that would enable her to buy any diamond jewel she could possibly desire, she remained steadfast in her love for her original engagement ring and wedding band, which she preferred to wear at home. “I was never willing to change them for a bigger stone,” she told Vogue in 2024. “I love, love, love these rings together, and wouldn’t trade them for nothing.” Rarely seen in public, Dolly Parton’s rings were a reminder of a very private relationship that gave rise to many of her most memorable songs during her career, and which she cherished and protected throughout her lifetime.
