The era of thematic red carpet dressing for movie premieres is well and truly in full swing, so the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s debut novel from 1811, Sense and Sensibility, called for something truly special.
At the London screening of the period drama, directed by Georgia Oakley, it’s star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Elinor Dashwood, greeted fans wearing period-appropriate jewels from the French house of Boucheron.

Designed by founder Frédéric Boucheron himself, the jewels included a pendant necklace from 1877, which the star wore on a velvet choker. Crafted from yellow gold, silver, diamonds and agate, the piece actually functions as a locket with a secret compartment for holding a message, miniature portrait or a lock of a loved one’s hair, reflecting the 19th century’s taste for intimate and deeply symbolic jewels.
She also opted for a cameo ring, also dating from 1877, showcasing two figures carved in relief on stone, adorned with Louis XV-shell motifs and set in yellow gold.

These vintage pieces are reminiscent of the archival Boucheron jewels worn by Margot Robbie for the UK premiere of Wuthering Heights earlier this year. She teamed vintage Boucheron brooche – the maker’s Walkyrie brooch from 1900 in yellow gold, garnet and diamonds and its garnet and diamond Assyrian Lion brooch from 1920 – with a replica of a bracelet Brontë frequently wore, which was made from the writer’s own hair.
The original was owned by Charlotte’s sister Anne and was a traditional piece of Victorian mourning jewellery made from Emily and Anne Brontë’s hair – a traditional method used in Victorian times to remember lost loved ones.
Sense and Sensibility is simply the latest period drama to satisfy our culture’s current desire for yearning, with two other Austen adaptations slated to come out this year – a remake of Pride and Prejudice, starring Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden and Olivia Colman, which will be coming to Netflix, and a Christmas special of The Other Bennett Sister, starring Ella Bruccoleri.
