Matt Damon has a reputation as a Rolex guy. While he may not have the watch collecting profile of his Ocean’s 11 co-star, Brad Pitt, Damon has a long history with watches and Rolex in particular, given he is often seen wearing an Explorer. There is also the old rumour that he once bought 36 Rolex’s for college friends at a reunion.
But for the premiere of The Odyssey, Damon went for something sleeker and sportier with Rolex’s new Land-Dweller 40. Released last year, the Land-Dweller 40 is available in 36mm or 40mm as well as gold, platinum or silver while the sapphire caseback showcases the movement. Most notably, the Land-Dweller 40 features a really neat hexagonal honeycomb motif etched across the dial.
The Land-Dweller 40 has been a popular choice among A-list Hollywood stars since its launch with Leonardo DiCaprio wearing one to the Oscars while Tom Cruise was spotted out and about in the model as was Mark Wahlberg in one of his Instagram videos. Sports stars have also taken to the new release with Roger Federer wearing one at Wimbledon while Lionel Messi was spotted in a Land-Dweller while arriving to training for Inter Miami.
Hamilton have long been a part of director Christopher Nolan’s films, with a Khaki Field featuring as a central plot point in Interstellar, and he now takes their partnership one step further with this collaboration.
While Hamilton will not be featured in the film itself as it is set in mythical Greece, for the first time the brand is collaborating with the Oscar winning director on a timepiece inspired by his retelling of The Odyssey.
Co-designed by Nolan, the watch is informed by motifs, themes and images directly from the film and story, most notably in the helmet and sword used by The Odyssey‘s hero, Odysseyus.
The influence is most notable on the dial and caseback with the black dial drawn from the helmet’s texture and the 12 o’clock index featuring a rivet from the sword’s scabbard. The hands of the watch are also sword shaped, while the caseback depicts the helmet worn by Odysseus and also features Nolan’s personal signature.
Hamilton and Nolan used the Khaki Field Automatic as a template for the piece, which comes in at a sizeable 42mm.
The watch has also been adorned in bronze, a clear nod to the material used to forge weapons at the time, while the strap is made out of leather.
Buyers of the watch also receive a replica of Athena’s pin, which in the story is gifted to Odysseus by his wife, Penelope. The pin is not just an accessory but can be worn as a broach while the box also comes with a commemorative plaque.
