Royal watchers and jewellery lovers alike have been quick to notice that Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, has been stepping out without her iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring in recent months.
The 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire, once belonging to Princess Diana, is one of the most recognisable pieces in her jewellery collection, so why has it been missing?
The answer might be for practical reasons. The Princess has long been known to tailor her jewellery choices to suit the occasion. On visits to hospitals and children’s wards, for example, she’s opted to forgo the ring entirely due to hygiene protocols. The same principle may apply to her recent engagements, which have included prison visits and hospital settings where excessive jewellery could be seen as impractical.
Instead, Kate has been seen wearing a sleek and understated combination: her gold wedding band and a diamond eternity ring, believed to be a gift from Prince William after the birth of Prince George. This refined pairing suggests a shift towards minimalism, perhaps a reflection of her evolving style, or simply a practical choice for hands-on engagements.
Jewellery experts have pointed out that royal women have always had their own approach to engagement rings. Queen Letizia of Spain, for instance, hasn’t worn hers in years, while Queen Mary often rotated between different rings. Even the late Queen Elizabeth II, though devoted to her engagement ring, was rarely seen without gloves, subtly altering how often the piece was on display.
While speculation will undoubtedly continue, the most likely explanation is that Kate’s jewellery choices are, as ever, intentional, opting for elegance and practicality in equal measure. After all, when your jewellery box includes royal heirlooms, sometimes less is more.
