The Met Gala red carpet is always full of surprises – and this year it came by the way of music legend Diana Ross, who stunned in a dress that had an 18-foot train adorned with crystal and beads.
The look was so staggering that it stopped Zendaya in her own tracks on the red carpet as she paused to take a moment to admire Ross’ incredible outfit.
It’s been 22 years since Ross visited the Met Gala – her first was in 1978 – and what a return to the red carpet it was.
The sweeping white gown Ross wore was adorned with crystal and beads and featured an 18-foot train that also included the names of her children and grandchildren. So long was the train that it stopped the red carpet in its tracks as the train spanned several stairs.
The 81-year-old completed the look with a feather-trimmed hat and long, diamond earrings.
As per Vogue, Ross brought the look together with the help of her son Evan Ross and the designer Ugo Mozie. The creation wanted to “spotlight a tailored design that celebrated her own family legacy – by spanning the generations of the Ross name, and doing so through refined style,” Vogue write.
The dress also seemed to nod to Rihanna’s Guo Pei’s omelette dress which, at the time, broke the internet.

For 2025, the theme of the event was ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, inspired by the work of Monica Miller, a leading scholar of contemporary African American and Afro-diasporic literature and culture, and her 2009 work, ‘Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity’.
Previous themes have ranged from ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ (2015) – which examined the influence of Chinese art, film and culture on Western fashion – and ‘Camp’ (2019), to ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’ from last year’s event.
This year, A$AP Rocky was co-chair of the Met Gala, alongside multi-hyphenate singer Pharrell Williams, actor Colman Domingo, F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and honorary co-chair, athlete LeBron James.
Earlier in the evening, Pharrell made a typically unforgettable appearance on this year’s 2025 Met Gala red carpet by wearing a custom Louis Vuitton look that included a jacket made of 100,000 pearls.
Elsewhere at the Met Gala, Lewis Hamilton hit the red carpet wearing a striking jewellery look from Briony Raymond.
Hamilton, coming to the event straight from his weekend stint at the Miami GP, wore some Briony Raymond Asscher Cut Diamond Studs in 18 carat White Gold alongside a vintage, 1980s Fancy White, Yellow, and Pink Diamond Brooch in 18 carat rose, yellow and white gold.
In other Met Gala news, A$AP Rocky was spotted wearing some standout vintage pieces also from Briony Raymond.
Colman Domingo also made headlines wearing a custom Valentino look alongside some Boucheron, while a brooch specially created for the Met Gala with a diamond worth $20 million also got its first outing.
