The cast and crew of 2006’s mega hit Marie Antoinette were reunited at the French palace of Versailles this week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s major hit film, plus a new exhibition about the production.

Two decades after the film’s release, its star, Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, who played her husband Louis XVI, journeyed back to the former French royal residence to toast its milestone anniversary, and to celebrate a dedicated exhibition at the Petit Trianon that commemorates it, which is sponsored by Cartier.

The neoclassical chateau and its lush grounds were actually gifted to the young Marie Antoinette by her husband and served as her private rural retreat. It also featured heavily in key moments from Coppola’s film, providing the scenic backdrop to many emotional moments away from the rigours and attention of courtly life.

The stars all chose to wear Cartier jewels for the evening, including Coppola, who shone in a pair of high jewellery earrings; Swartzman, who opted for an onyx and diamond-spotted Panther pin on his lapel, and Dunst, who added yellow gold hoop earrings and a yellow gold Baignoire watch by the maker to her look.

At an interview held in Paris just before the event, Coppola described still feeling so much pride at the level of detail that went into her film’s production, all these years later.

“I’m so appreciative and impressed by the crew that we had, like Milena [Canonero]’s costumes and the art department,” she reminisced on camera, alongside Schwartzman. “[Award-winning production designer] K.K Barrett did an incredible job with his whole team. Just all the details that went into making the food and the flowers.”

“I still feel like it’s movie magic that all these people can work together, and we’re always rushed and doing things quickly, and somehow it all comes together. But there was such a big team and everyone was doing their detailed work so incredibly.”

The Cartier-supported retrospective will run until January 27 next year and showcases plenty of artefacts from Marie Antoinette, including its opulent costumes and accessories (the film won an Oscar for Best Costume Design at the 79th Academy Awards), and exclusive behind-the-scenes imagery captured by Andrew Durham, which can also be seen in a new book entitled Making Marie Antoinette.
